FORESTRY NEWS

Wildfires could be a sign of ecological urgency.
Greg Smith
Wildfires in Florida have burnt over 25,000 acres of forest since January 1st which is almost 40 square miles of beautiful country. Heavy rains this past week have given us a sign of relief and hopefully will end this years fire season. But the damage has been done. It most cases, experts say the forests will rejuvenate and flourish stronger from the fires, but this takes time. Charles Bronson, Commissioner of Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services made on-site visits to areas hit hardest by the fires. As he stated back in March of this year, “Prevention is the key. We’re asking residents and visitors alike to exercise extreme caution when you use anything that involves fire or high heat. Before conducting any outdoor burning, check with officials to see if it is a dangerous burning day and if there is a local burn ban in effect.” But mother nature seemed to think otherwise because most of the fires were believed to be caused by lightning strikes.
The view that should be taken by many Floridians for today's ecological fears is re growth. Claiming ownership of our own ecosystem and putting back more than what we or mother nature has taken. Planting a tree is one of the easiest ways I could imagine for bringing back Florida's once rich landscape. If each family out of the 7 million households in Florida were to plant one tree, the rewards from our small donation to the countryside would be astronomical. What matters is that you showed you care. The seed we have sown will last for 50 to 100 years and everyone reaps the benefits from just one small effort.

Tree Companies
using Cranes to remove trees after storms or routine services.
Greg Smith
Sometimes lightning
does strike twice and a rare incident took place today that proves it.
One tree company in Lexington S.C. was removing a tree that had crashed
into a home during severe weather and during the removal a miscalculation
flipped the crane into the home. Another tree company in Orlando Fl.
suffered the same fate during a routine removal of a large oak tree
that toppled the crane and laid it's boom across the roof of the home.
I'm writing this article in defense for these companies. Not because
we are a tree company that uses cranes to remove trees but to remind
people a few obvious facts. Cranes are used to do the work that is encumbered
or can be fatal by conventional methods. I have worked around cranes
for the last 25 years and lifted everything from 200-200,000 pounds.
Working around Cranes is dangerous and unexpected things can happen.
When something does go wrong you have no control of the outcome because
the weight is too heavy. But cranes are the safest way to lift heavy
objects from point A to point B. Almost every crane company will deny
you rental if it's for removing trees. The reason for this is that using
cranes for removing trees is unpredictable and they won't risk the damage.
A strap is wrapped around a limb or section of tree, the crane pulls
it's cable tight, the climber makes his cut and the crane operator has
an unknown weight thrust upon him. Most Crane operators are trained
to be lone wolf operators, they can test the weight 2 inches from the
ground and calculate angle to weight for the crane they operate all
on their own. Crane operators for a tree company rely on the climber
and the climber relies on the operator. If they are not in sync a serious
accident can happen very quickly. Sun State Trees & Property Maintenance
Inc. is sympathetic for the tree companies that lose a crane because
its a major loss for their company. But these incidents should in no
way keep tree companies or home owners from using cranes to remove trees.
Cranes will continue to be used in the tree industry because it's safer
removing large trees in confined areas. Always make sure that the company
you use is licensed and insured.
